Maybe I'll give him the shovel talk. Threaten to make him eat nothing but pizza if he hurts you. ( for other people, that might not be much of a threat.

[That earns her a faint sideways smile.]

I'm pretty sure he'd rather cut off his own foot than hurt me, Kara. Pizza or no. Bruce has... always taken care of me, in his own way. The same way I've tried to take care of him.

I wouldn't tell him that to his face. He barely believes me when I say it. But it's... really good.

Now. I should probably get down to starting the pies, don't you think?

[He points over to his living roomish 'area']

You can settle in. This kitchen is a bit small for two.

[Especially when you've got shoulders like his. Plus, there's something that she might be interested in sitting in his living room, namely a boardgame]

( hi shoulders are very broad indeed. so kara wanders over to the living room area, happily babbling along about how she appreciates that he's making the cakes --

and then she discovers the board game. ) Clark!! Did you talk to Bruce? Or do you just love board games, too?

[He leans out of the kitchen to look at what she's looking at.]

I wouldn't say I love them, but I've always liked them. And Bruce and I were bored one day, so we picked it up.

Are you familiar with that one? The kid at the store said it might be good.

I talked to Bruce the other day about organising a game night. I really, really like board games.

( but - ) I don't know this one.

[truth_and_justice]

He said it'd be good for two people.

[Also that it tended towards being abstract and tactical, that last part being why he'd grabbed it.]

Did you and Bruce play?

[truth_and_justice]

[He shakes his head.]

Never got around to it. We... spend our time together...

[It's clear he's trying to find the words, though not because he's trying to get around something uncomfortable or awkward. It's just not an easy concept to explain.]

Most of the time, we just kind of... enjoy one another's company. Sometimes we talk about nothing. Sometimes we don't talk. Neither of us are used to much downtime so we're just... savoring it. Together.

I'm glad.

[And there's a bit of awkward aw shucks to that, but not for long. Not before he looks over at Kara.]

And how are things going for you in that arena?

( now look who's awkward. ) People here are really nice? But I'm just not great at the whole dating thing?

I mean. I kissed someone at New Year's? That counts, right?

That absolutely counts. And as long as you're enjoying yourself here, that's the important part.

[He's really the last person to judge.]

I am. Though I wish I was better at dating. Or that Alex were here.

( y'know, to tell her when people are flirting with her. and just because kara misses her sister. )

Well, the nice thing about dating is... there's always more fish in the sea. And the ones who're really worth it?

I hope so. I mean, I'd like to find someone. Even though I'm not sure it's fair on them, at least back home.

There's no such thing as fair when it comes to love, Kara.

Not that you can decide on by yourself. Not that isn't incredibly personal.

[A faint smile.]

Every couple figures out what's 'fair' together. What they want, what they're willing to tolerate... 'fair' is about satisfying needs. Not some arbitrary list of rules or restrictions.
